What You Cannot Eat In Pregnancy?

Seafood High In Mercury

Those who are breastfeeding or pregnant should completely refrain from consuming these fish (swordfish, shark, king mackerel, and tilefish) due to their high levels of mercury.  Mercury harms the brain development and nervous system of a newborn.

Many types of low-mercury seafood includes in your diet during pregnancy. Seafood fatty acids have a major role to play in developing the kid’s brain development.

Unpasteurized Milk And Juices

The major issue is listeriosis. It is a bacterial infection that turns out to be critical for babies. Because in pregnancy, the immune system decreases, hence, you tend to be at risk.

Listeria monocytogenes may be lurking in dairy products and unpasteurized milk, unpasteurized juices, and different food items.  However, it grows in the refrigerator.

Chilled Meat And Deli Meats

Listeria infestations can also occur from chilled deli meats such as turkey, ham, roast beef, and hot dogs. They are unsafe if you don’t cook them completely.

The same is true for meat sauces, deli meat salads, and frozen smoked seafood.  Shelf-stable meat, canned food, and seafood can be eaten; it does not cause any harm. Though, as the items have major content of sodium, hence, we do not consider them to be the best food in pregnancy.

Raw Or Undercooked Meat, Fish, Poultry, Eggs, And Shellfish

The major danger of undercooked and raw foods is the parasite Toxoplasma and Salmonella. It affects unborn babies and creates severe health issues. Do not consume sauces that are prepared with mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, caesar dressing, etc.  If you are cooking food that requires raw eggs and will not be cooked like a sauce or spread, use a pasteurized egg product.

Raw Sprouts And Unwashed Raw Foods

Raw sprouts seem to be healthy, but during pregnancy, they are not suitable. Before the sprouts even grow, bacteria can enter the sprout seeds from the shell cracks. As sprouts cannot get boiled before meals, hence the bacteria can’t get killed.

So, do not eat clover, raw alfalfa, mung bean sprouts, radish, etc. that you can find in salads and sandwiches. Toxoplasma can also be found in unwashed fruits and vegetables. Rinse the product in the running water And avoid eating crushed fruits or vegetables, as bacteria can thrive in areas where the product has been damaged.

Energy Drinks And Excessive Consumption Of Coffee

Approximately 200 milligrams of caffeine daily can be called safe in pregnancy. Do not consume energy drinks during pregnancy. As few do not have much quantity of it, but, can result in abnormal heart rhythms and high blood pressure.

Do not drink real energy boosters. Ginseng, green tea extract, guarana, mate, etc are stimulants that are not safe to consume during pregnancy time.

Unripe Papaya

Green papaya has a latex substance that results in uterine contractions. The element behaves as a hormone prostaglandin and oxytocin. This includes when the labor begins Therefore, it is wise to avoid unripe papaya, which we can get in Thai restaurants.

Foods With Trans Fats

Trans fats are troubling as they not only boost LDL cholesterol however even reduce the heart-protecting HDL cholesterol. Furthermore, the study confirms the linking of trans fats with infertility and endometriosis.  Below is the food that has the presence of trans fats:

  • Fried foods: While most fast-food chains switched to oils that are not hydrogenated, some still use partially hydrogenated (and trans) oils to fry foods like potato pancakes, cheese sticks, and fries.
  • Margarine, frosting, and non-dairy creamers: Check labels before purchasing.
  • Biscuit and Pancake Blends: Companies combine these to provide the product with a fluffy and light texture. Be sure to read labels and check the ingredient list.

Foods With Sugar

Cakes, candy, ice cream, and cookies, have more sugar content. Though, the rich substance can lurk in different unlikely areas. Added sugar not only contributes to epidemics of obesity and diabetes, but it also does not provide any nutritional benefits. Also if you have gestational diabetes, then you cannot produce sufficient insulin for managing extra sugar.

Foods With High Sodium

Although we usually need salty foods in the pregnancy phase. Particularly, in the initial phase, you should not consume sodium-rich food.

The side effects of pregnancy are many- water retention, swelling, and when sodium is taken in more amounts, things become uncontrollable. So, consume only 2300 mg of sodium daily.

Concluding Remarks

It is necessary to avoid the beverages and food that give your health and baby a risk. However, some beverages and food are safe to take during pregnancy time. But, some high mercury fish, unpasteurized dairy, alcohol, raw fish, etc. cannot be taken.
