Top Strategies for Remembering Irregular English Verbs

1. Group common irregular verbs together

Irregular actions do not follow any rules, which makes them very difficult to remember. However, some English irregular verbs follow the same pattern.

How you group actions depend on the things that are easiest for you, but here are some suggestions:

Verbs that are present, past, and past participle remain the same.

Example: cost and set.

Verbs that are the same in past forms, but not present.

Examples: breeding, breeding, and germination, s

Verbs ending in the previous participle.

Example: Talking, talking and waking up, waking up.

2. Learn with exciting forms of all new vocabulary

By learning them right from the start, you can make irregular actions easier for yourself in the future. Whenever you learn a new verb, learn its duration as well.

Just don’t learn that stealing means taking something without permission. You also need to learn that its past tense has been stolen and its past participant has been stolen.

3. First memorize the 10 most common irregular verbs

Not all irregular verbs are commonly used. You can never use words like broadcast and you will probably see the word as part of the sentence of a law-abiding citizen (he is the one who follows the law).

Instead of listing alphabetically, first focus on the most used words.

Start with these very simple words (they are listed as present, past, past partners).

That’s right, all these small but very important actions are irregular! You need to use their irregular forms in your daily conversations.

4. Memorize a game

You may have a problem remembering irregular actions using flashcards, but if you have a problem, why not turn it into a game?

There are a few games online that can make actions fun and easy to remember. The British Council has a quiz-like game, the Macmillan Dictionary has an action wheel, and the quiet has a risk-like game.

You can even create your own game with a table of contents: write down the activities and their past or past participants (or both) on separate index cards. Then turn all the cards in front of you with their back up.

Now you can play a memory game. Turn on one card, then the other. When two cards match, let them face each other. If they don’t, give them back and try again.

5. Learn in sentences

Words can be easier to remember when they are part of a sentence. Learn words by putting them into sentences and you will also learn how to use them correctly.

To learn the word see, for example, you can use the sentences: “I see bees, I see snow, but I’ve never seen bees in the snow!”

Be creative sentences The more forgotten the sentences, the easier it will be to remember them. You can use rhymes, keep sentences short, or use as many verbs as you can to create a complete story. How you do this will depend on you as long as it helps you remember the action forms.

6. Learn with music

Another great way to give more meaning to words is through the use of music. You can find many songs on YouTube to remember random actions.

FluenceCMC uses an interesting rap song to teach the forms of the most common irregular English verbs.

This adorable cat tells a story while teaching video actions.

School House Rock is a fantastic cartoon that you will sing for several days after listening to it

Lists. Leave the lists where you will see them

Sometimes just memorizing is the best way. To make it easier for you, divide verbs into groups of 5 to 10 words (you can group them by alphabetical order, how common they are or by the groups, we suggested earlier in this article).

Write the verbs on paper and leave them in places where you can see them throughout the day. Tap on the back of your coffee maker, on your table, and even on the bathroom wall! Just looking at the list for a few minutes a day can be enough to remember them.

Nothing beats practice – but it’s important to practice properly! Whenever you speak to an English speaker, ask them to correct any mistakes you may have made while speaking. This is great for any of your English speakers, not just for casual actions.

Make sure you can accept their correction without being upset or discouraged. Remember, they are helping you!

How common are irregular English verbs?

Most conventional verbs are irregular, so it’s important to learn them!

The few words you use every day in conversation are irregular. You need to tell someone that you have already started working on a new project in the workplace. But I didn’t say anything because I thought I was busy.”

The list of irregular English verbs is not very long when you consider that the English language has more than a million words! If you don’t know where to start, it’s still hard to learn.

The first thing to do is just look at a list. You can find a list of irregular verbs in English right here.
