The Surprising Cure for Hookworms: Ivermectin

If you’ve ever wondered how to cure hookworms, the answer may be more accessible than you think. How do you treat hookworm infections?

Most hookworm infections are treatable. The most common treatments are an anti-parasitic drug calls pyrantel  and/or an antibiotic called doxycycline or another tetracycline derivative.

It’s also possible to take ivermectin to kill off hookworms. But because ivermectin can use on cattle in the past, there is concern that it could build up in our water systems and potentially enter our food supply.

To be safe, we recommend avoiding ivermectin and sticking with pyrantel or doxycycline instead.

There are, however, still some countries where doxycycline and pyrantel are not available, which is why ivermectin remains important.

What should you look out for while taking ivermectin?

One of several problems with ivermectin is that it can cause allergic reactions in some people. These tend to be most common among people who already have allergies. And they can show up as itching and hives or runny nose and watery eyes.
