How to Choose the Right Sleeping Mattress?

It is a fact. When we sleep well, our lives are better, even when we have difficulty coping. On the contrary, poor sleep can ruin our daily lives – with the consequent consequences. So after choosing your new bed, make sure the sleeping mattress you order fits not only the size of your furniture but also the size of your body.

Today, one can find a huge variety of mattresses. The variety of construction materials and degree of flexibility is similar.

What is the ideal? Exactly what suits your body and your habits.

This very conclusion has dispelled the myth that the hard sleeping mattress is the most suitable. Now, the choice is made based not only on materials that differ in both quality and price. But also in some other parameters such as body weight, preferred sleeping position, ambient temperature, any musculoskeletal problems. And generally in the comfort that everyone seeks.

The dimensions of the sleeping mattress

Length and width

After choosing the type of mattress we want, we must make sure it has the right dimensions. In addition to the height and the other features, it is essential to choose the right size. An important parameter in this option is the number of people who will use it.

To achieve quality sleep, the dimension is an aspect that can not be overlooked because the mattress on which we will lie must allow us to stretch our legs and arms without excess. This means that the sleeping mattress will be 20 to 30 cm longer and wider than the body structure.

The measures of the mattresses are more or less predetermined by European standards and follow different standards depending on whether they are intended for adults or children. In general, the dimensions are defined as follows:

  • Single mattress: Suitable for one person with dimensions corresponding to 90 cm wide for 1.90 / 2.00 meters high.
  • Double mattress: Suitable for two people, has a width of 1.60 / 1.70 meters and a length of 1.90 / 2.00 meters.
  • Semi-double mattress: Designed to offer more comfort to a person, it is, therefore, larger than the sole with dimensions of 1.10 cm wide and about 2.00 cm long.
  • French type: This is a less common mattress on the market, with dimensions of 1.40 cm wide and always 1.90 high, therefore slightly larger than the semi-double.
  • Custom-made: Perhaps the most appropriate option is to order the mattress according to the size of the bed. Of course, in this case you need to know exactly the dimensions of the bed so as not to pay for a mattress that does not fit properly.

Height

How high and how thick the mattress will be is one of the crucial parameters in your choice. Thus, an overly thin mattress does not really have the proper structure to provide comfortable sleep and can often be the cause of muscle and neck pain as well as cervical pain.

But how to choose the right height?

In general, mattresses with a height between 23-30 cm are the most suitable. But again, the rule is not absolute. In any case, you need to make sure, taking into account the weight of the user and the material from which the mattress is made, that you will be able to lie down comfortably without wear.

A typology based on construction materials

Memory foam mattressesmemory foam )

Memory foam – as it is known by the English name -, is a synthetic material. It is very flexible allowing a good distribution of pressure during rest. With this material the air circulation is generally low, so the body heat is trapped in the mattress making it suitable for those who are very cold or live in areas with particularly cold climates. As it tends to “remember” the shape of the body, this foam is ideal even for very thin people. This adaptation to the body means less movement during sleep. However, the memory foam mattress does not respond very quickly to changes in posture. In conclusion: it adapts easily to the body but not immediately.

These mattresses are also lighter than those made of other materials. An element that translates into easy transport and easier handling, especially when it comes to double layers.

Mattresses with springs

These are the most classic. Let not the mind go of course to those that our grandparents had. Modern springs allow the creation of mattresses that guarantee elasticity and stability. They also allow ventilation and are ideal for those who sweat a lot or live in hot climates. The springs are most often protected, ie one by one in a fabric case so that they do not wear out from contact with each other. As they adapt to body pressure they suit everyone, even those who are overweight. As the springs are usually located in the center of the mattress, adding a layer of foam to its surface provides complete comfort.

Degree of hardness and weight

A good sleeping mattress should support the weight of the body properly. In fact, it should be strong enough to support it, but not to the point of causing discomfort. The most important thing is to respect the natural inclination of the spine. Contrary to popular belief that hard mattresses are the most suitable for the correct position of the spine, the degree of stiffness has now been shown to be a purely subjective matter. That is, it depends on the personal preferences and weight of the person who will use it.

So if you sleep on your back, a harder mattress with proper spine support is the ideal choice. If you sleep on your side again you may be looking for a less hard sleeping mat, which allows your shoulders to sink slightly to achieve maximum comfort.

Weight also plays an important role in choosing a mattress, as it determines the degree of need for body support. For example, people with a lot of weight need a harder mattress. On the contrary, the thinner ones will sleep better in more flexible mattresses that have been created to adapt to the body.

And what should couples who most often differ greatly in weight do? In this case, the most ideal choice is two single layers that will meet their special needs without separating them.

Sleeping Mattress – Try it before you buy

Surely the sleeping mattress you want is meant to rest you for years to come if not for a decade. Therefore, it is worth wasting a few minutes of your time to try it before you buy it.

Indeed, sitting on a mattress for a while in the exhibition is not enough to know if it is right for you. Basically, you need to lie down for more time and dare to change postures (side, forehead, and back). Only then will you know if from now on your life will be better thanks to your sleep.

While lying on your back, try to pass your hand (or rather ask your companion) below your waist. If there is a large gap, it means that the layer is harder for your data. If again the hand does not pass or passes with great difficulty, the mattress is soft and the body sinks too much. Ideally, the hand should find some resistance as it passes.

In short, there is no perfect sleeping mat in the absolute sense of the word. But there is a perfect mattress for each of us. Also, having acquired a little knowledge about the types of mattresses you can now discern what would suit you best.
