A home is a place that our heart lies. No wonder that every nook and corner of a home is taken care of meticulously. All of us love to keep our homes neat and clean. When we speak of home hygiene, the one aspect that needs regular maintenance is the curtains. Be it the windows or the doors, curtains are widely used in all kinds of homes.

Curtains are not just for privacy but are also for controlling the flow of natural light. As mentioned, be it for windows or doors, curtains despite being hanging from the ceiling are prone to get dirty very fast.

That’s because curtains when used at the windows are prone to attract a lot of dust from the air and when used on the doors are prone to attract stains and dust. Whatever may be the reason and no matter where they are used, it is loud and clear that curtains need cleaning.

Ideally, every 15 days spending a day curtain cleaning is suggested. So, here are some easy ways to maintain your curtains clean and neat.

If you are using fabric/cloth curtains:

1. Cleaning and maintaining fabric-based curtains is very easy. All you need to do is unbutton the curtains and wash them in the washing machine.

2. If you feel that the curtains have stains, then soak the curtains in a bucket of hot water by adding a small amount of detergent. Let the curtain soak for 15 minutes and then you can wash it.

3. For curtains that come with pre-fixed metal rings as holders, you cannot put them in the washing machine. You will have to either hand wash or give it for dry cleaning.

4. If you are washing at home, be sure that the fabric is suitable for water wash as some curtain materials like Lace and velvet are not that water wash suitable. Another point to remember is color fade. It is quite common with fabrics like cotton and other natural fabrics with a strong color that may ooze color. SO, ensure that you wash these curtains by first draining them in a bucket of water to get rid of that extra color. Once done, then wash them in the washing machine.

If you are using blinds or shades as curtains then:

1. Cleaning blinds is actually quite easy compared to fabric-based because, in fabric base curtains, you need physical strength to clean.

2. With blinds, you can use a vacuum cleaner or a wet cloth concept.

3. If you are using a vacuum cleaner:

4. Roll or slide the blinds in a uniform position.

5. Use the attachment that has round brush bristles.

6. Vacuum clean the blinds

If you are using a wet cloth:

1. Tuck an old bed sheet at the back of the curtain rod and pin the cloth with pins.

2. Now either take a spray detergent and a dry cloth or detergent infused water with a cloth.

3. Wipe the blinds with the cloth. If you find stains you can also use a soft bristle brush and clean the affected area with the brush.

4. Once done, pull the cloth and let the blinds dry.

The above-mentioned points, ideally suit all kinds of curtains. However, the cleaning and maintenance of the curtain depending on the fabric, size, and usage.
